IN APRIL OF EVERY YEAR, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE U.S. NATIONAL ARBORETUM, I.I. CHAPTER NO.1 PUTS ON AN EXHIBIT FOR THE PUBLIC AND THE CHAPTER’S MEMBERS PREPARE MAGNIFICENT ARRANGEMENTS AND FREE WORKSHOPS.For a second year, due to Covid, this year’s exhibit will be different, but the show goes on! As always, the Exhibit will be free and open to the public. However, this year’s plan is to have two exhibits, one in April and another in June 2022.
The April Exhibit will be an outdoor exhibit of large arrangements made by groups of ikebana artists over two weekends in April, April 8 – 10 and April 16-18. Each week’s arrangements will be different. These arrangements will be on display in the North Court of the Visitor’s Center. Through QR codes which you can scan on your smartphone, you can listen to the artists speaking about their arrangements and their Schools of Ikebana.
The June Exhibit will follow our traditional format. Many individual arrangements showing the different styles and concepts from seven schools of Ikebana will be on display. Hosts will be available to guide visitors through the exhibit and answer questions. This exhibit will be indoors at the Bonsai & Penjing Museum.
You will find detailed information on this page and also on the USNA website under Calendar of Events.

The Cherry Blossom Festival activities are back and we are very excited that II Chapter No. 1 will be providing arrangements for two events. These events will allow our Chapter to raise awareness of ikebana and showcase the talents of our members.
The first event will be at the Japan Information and Cultural Center (JICC) in Washington, DC at its location at 1150 18th St. NW Washington DC 20036. For eight weeks beginning on March 22, 2022, JICC is hosting an exhibition titled “Exploring Hiroshige and His Influence on Social Media.” In addition to the wood block prints and photography celebrating Hiroshige, II Chapter No. 1 will exhibit an arrangement each week of the exhibition in the lobby of JICC which will also be viewable from the street.

Naohiro is the son of the late Iemoto Akihiro Kasuya, the third headmaster of Ichiyo School of Ikebana and his teacher. In January 2019, Naohiro became the fourth headmaster of the Ichiyo School of Ikebana, Tokyo, Japan.
Iemoto Naohiro has performed in solo-exhibitions, Ikebana exhibitions and live performances in Japan and throughout the world during his tenure as Iemoto Designate. His works have been featured in movies and TV dramas and he has collaborated with artists from other fields. His workshops and live performances have taken place in Belgium, Singapore, France, Australia, India, United States, China, New Zealand, South Africa, and Ukraine. Also, he serves as Director of the Japan Ikebana Arts Association and is a Counselor of the Ikebana Association.
Now as Iemoto, he continues to hone his personal interpretation by creating arrangements that provide balance and tension while allowing the materials to determine their true beauty. His work gives the onlooker a wider view of nature by filling a room, stage, window or in setting up a sophisticated arrangement with bamboo.
Iemoto Naohiro is seeking to raise awareness of Japanese culture and further develop the “art of flower arrangement” to pass the culture of Ikebana to future generations.
The Ichiyo School of Ikebana was founded in 1937 and specializes in combining materials through a natural balance of their weights, rather than by fastening the materials down with a kenzan or komi. Through balancing the materials, the materials and containers come together into a mutually cooperative placement.
